Scheduling

Office hours are held between 8 AM and 3 PM Mon-Thurs. Sessions are by appointment only. Once made, the appointment is a time set aside specifically for you.

Continuity of care is important when ensuring excellence in psychiatric care. If too many appointments are missed or canceled, this may disrupt your progress and can make treatment ineffective. Dr. Schacter understands that emergencies do happen and occasionally patients will need to cancel or reschedule appointments. In the interest of all her patients and to keep the schedule open and available should someone else need care, she does require a minimum 24-hour notice for any cancellations, or you will be billed at the usual full fee for service. Appointments will also be considered as cancellations after 20 minutes past your appointment time unless prior notification and approval is made.

Referrals are always welcome but are not required. If referred, we would greatly appreciate you informing us in advance so we may coordinate care with your doctor or therapist in advance if necessary.

Dr. Schacter does not perform psychiatric evaluations for legal purposes such as establishing grounds for a personal injury claim, custody evaluations, or for the sole purpose of obtaining social security disability income.

Refills

Refills are customarily handled during visits. Please be aware of what medications will need refills prior to the visit. If calling for a prescription, please call ahead and allow for at least three business days for physician-to-pharmacy communications. Weekend calls for refills will be initiated the next business day. Medication changes are not refills and are not typically handled over the phone and likely will require an appointment.

Telephone Calls

Dr. Schacter can be reached on her office line at 704-847-0424. Patient communication is essential to alleviate concerns and to promote a healthy doctor-patient relationship. All necessary calls will not be charged to the patient. If Dr. Schacter is unavailable to take your call, please leave a message on her confidential voice mail and she will respond as quickly as possible. When leaving a voice mail, please leave your full name, your number where you can be reached, who you are calling about, the best time to contact you, and a brief message with your question or concern.

Due to confidentially concerns, email is not a form of a communication used by the office for clinical issues and is used solely for administrative-related items. All call after 2pm, will be answered on the next business day. In the event of a severe psychiatric emergency, you are encouraged to call 911 and/or proceed to your nearest hospital.

Established patients will have access to Dr. Schacter's mobile phone. Please do not text. Use of this number is reserved exclusively for urgent situations that occur outside of regular business hours that truly cannot wait until the next business day.

New Patients

How To Begin

Initial assessments generally consist of 1-3 consecutive visits that will be split between the patient and if applicable his/her/their parents. In Compliance with the No Surprise Act, of 2022, each of these visits currently costs $425/visit.

During those first three sessions, Dr. Schacter will review your current medical records and could possibly also request additional information from previous patient records, and/or interview spouses, family members, peers, and teachers if permission is granted by the patient.

For children & adolescents, Dr. Schacter will also assess the emotional, cognitive, educational, physical, genetic, developmental, family, peer, and social components of the patient's presenting problem.

The last visit in the assessment process will be used to review the presenting diagnosis and the recommended treatment plan. The treatment plan may or may not include medication. If all parties are agreeable, a long-term patient/doctor relationship will be established.

Should you be in active treatment with a therapist prior to initiating an evaluation with Dr. Schacter, she will coordinate treatment with that therapist and you.

Dr. Schacter does not perform psychiatric evaluations for legal purposes such as establishing grounds for a personal injury claim, or for the sole purpose of obtaining social security disability income.

For both new and pre-existing patients, please access and download the applicable patient forms using the FORMS tab above.

Insurance & Billing

Dr. Schacter bills as a "fee for service" provider and is considered "out of network" with your insurance company. Payment is expected in full, by cash or check, or charge at the time of your office visit.

This course of action makes us unable to file a claim, but maximizes your privacy and also puts you in control of what information you make available to your insurance company. As an "out of network" provider, we provide you with a statement that you may, or may not, choose to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

If any additional information is needed, we will work alongside you to provide what is needed to process your claim. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse you, since insurance policies vary so widely with respect to how psychiatric services are covered. There may also be additional services recommended that may not be reimbursable by insurance, like school based evaluations or reports. These will be discussed as the situation arises.

When calling your insurance for benefit and coverage questions, it is imperative that you tell them it is for psychiatric services, as most insurance companies handle these claims differently. Some even go through an additional, separate insurance carrier altogether. Usually those companies list the Mental Health benefit number on the back of your insurance card separately. We always recommend actually speaking with a customer service representative with your carrier, to get the most current, accurate information available.
